Your feet and ankles deserve some TLC: Tendon Loving Care. Pointe shoe ribbons must tie snuggly to look neat and professional en pointe, but standing flat they can chafe the Achilles tendon. Strategic insertion of elastic makes ribbons comfortable. Gaynor Minden TLC Ribbons are super-tidy: ribbon and elastic are the same width and color and meticulously stitched together. The ribbon is soft yet substantial, polyester elastic is firm yet stretchy, and the lycra color is peachy pink to match tights and shoes.
These ribbons are very soft and matte, although they seem to have a bit of sheen in this photo. They match ballet pink tights very well. Since they are not really a satiny ribbon they are perfect for anybody who finds the shiny Bloch or Bunheads ribbons ugly. Also, they hold much better when tied. They do not slip around rights near as much.
Like Bloch and unlike Bunheads, the elastic sewn into these ribbons perfectly match the width and color of the ribbons so the look is very clean.
My only complaint is that the elastic isn't very stretchy and can feel a bit stiff.
Regardless, I highly recommend anybody with normal peachy color shoes try these ribbons. They are extremely durable and, aside from the elastic being a bit stuff, very comfy.
If you have Grishko or Russian Pointe pointe shoes I recommend the Bunheads Tendonitis ribbons in the light color.
The color is a bit more saturated on the ribbons than I expected, but they still work alright with most ballet pink tights. The elastic on the ribbons really works well with my achilles tendon, and the ribbons don't really fray at the ends, though I would still recommended to cinch the ends, just to be safe.
Since I had been dealing with achilles tendonitis for a while, a few friends advised me to try these ribbons. I was a bit skeptical at first but I ordered them. After trying these, I know I will never be wearing any other ribbon! These have the perfect amount of give for my achilles, yet still provide ample strength to keep the sides of my pointe shoe pulled snug against my arch. Plus, the Gaynor Minden double sided ribbon can't be beat. I have already recommended these to my friend and she loves them too!
After throwing the bloch elastorib out in disgust for its shinyness; desperately sewing the strange bunheads flexiribbon back together after it fell apart AGAIN; and even making my own poor examples of elastic insert ribbon, GM saved the day. I like GM, someday we will probably all catch up to the ingenuity that has been going on there for years. I don't even wear their shoes yet, but they certainly lead the field in comfort for dancers. TLC ribbon is appropriately coloured for most pointe shoes, (reminiscent of Freed ribbons). The elastic insert is AS WIDE AS THE RIBBON. And nothing is shiny. At last. TLC has not fallen apart on any of the 5 pairs of shoes I am using it on. I expect a long and happy reusable lifespan from these miracles of nature.
