DD tried on various brands, and this tutu was her favorite because it was stiff like a performance tutu but was pull-on. It also stuck out straight, whereas other practice tutus flopped down or tended to tilt up. We would recommend the Sansha practice tutu.

When my DD first put on the tutu (S), it flipped up and would not lay properly. We tried using books to flatten, rubber bands, etc. After using a profuse amount of steam on each layer, I managed to get the tutu to lay right. If DD hangs upside down, the layers invert again. I wonder if over time, the stiffness will give way and the tutu will not require so much maintenance.

Decent for the price, Just needs work!
by: Seamstress - 03/07/2016
Comfort:
Durability:
Do not buy this if you are not willing to put a small amount of work into it. Using an iron set on its lowest steam setting, Press each layer flat and straight. Keep the iron moving!! Also use an iron you are familiar with and trust. after all the layers are nice and flat, press all the layers downward. This is hard to describe but you need to have the part the layers are sewn to on the ironing board, push the layers down with the steamy iron, as if it would lay down like a romantic tutu. Then the tutu needs to be tacked. This can be done with a tagging gun or by hand with needle and thread (use loops of thread not tight stitches.) It is best if you can have the dancer wear it while tacking. Tacking will further insure the tutu does not pop up. I will attach a picture of one I did, and later will try to add pics of the process.
Also note that this is NOT made from tulle but Net. A very stiff net. it can be itchy I guess.

Does not get flattened and damages tight
by: lilyann - 01/05/2016
Comfort:
This tutu does not get flattened, as some of reviewers said already. I left the tutu in hot water, put heavy books on, did tucking, used hair dryer hoping heat will flatten it, but never flattened after 7 months. This tutu is very scratchy and tough. Every time I wore it on, my tights had some holes by getting scratched by this tutu. This runs super small too. My waist is 25 and hip is 34, regular clothes is usually XS but with this I needed Medium. This is awful tutu and I really wish I didn't get it.

Awkward and Ugly
by: efballet - 11/11/2015
Comfort:
I got this tutu because I thought that it would be a good for practice. I got it and first it does not come with a tutu carrier. Then when I tried it on the tutu actually pointed upwards. I thought that it would get better with time, but it didn't. It also ran really small and was just pretty bad over all. I recommend you buy the other option that is slightly more expensive but definitely better. My friend go it and it looks really good, this one is really not worth it and I'm disappointed. I don't even want to wear it to practice in class it's that bad.

Lovely... after some work
by: MadsMR - 09/03/2015
Comfort:
Durability:
This tutu is very nice, but the way it comes packed causes it to look like Marilyn Monroe's skirt. It literally goes up to your underarms and requires being placed in a steamy room for awhile and then being placed under heavy books for a week or two and it needs tacking. Once you flatten it the tutu looks great. I'm tall and thin and the medium fit me very well.

Would not flatten!
by: AngryMom - 02/02/2015
Comfort:
Durability:
I work as a costume mistress for a ballet company and bought this for my daughter who wanted her own for variations classes. This is a very bad rehearsal tutu. We read reviews to see how others dealt with the problem of the tutu going up (like a tulip!) and tried everything - flattening with heavy books, tacking layers, storing in a paper bag, hanging upside down. One month later it still won't flatten. Just when you think it looks flat, just try jumping with it on, and the skirt folds right back up! My daughter finally did some heavy tacking with dental floss and managed to "tame" the skirt. It shouldn't take this long for a tutu to flatten. And it certainly shouldn't require a lot of customer effort to make this tutu work.

good practice tutu
by: Tegan - 01/12/2015
Comfort:
Durability:
We used this for recreational kids performance tutu. It held up well, the elastic band is not as flattering as the toher styles of tutu closures. great value, it needed some serious steaming stop it from flipping up to armpits! Ship it in a bag DDS! The shipping method and having it flipped inside out was a pain. Besides the shipping method and waist band great tutu!

Love the tutu
by: Micah - 12/31/2014
Comfort:
Durability:
Ok. My first tutu. As a guy, we normally do not dance in tutus, but this was for a special occasion. First....ultra fast shipping! Thank you DDS! Fit perfectly, I did order a size up. It slips right on, no hooks or snaps, no wires to bend. That's a plus, it did need to be flattened. Just lay flat on the floor place a box and book over it and in an hour viola! A perfectly flat tutu! Would have rated a 5 if it came with a bag.

Good Quality

Durability:
I ordered this tutu in black size medium. I took the advice of other reviews and ordered bigger. Normally I would wear a small because I have a 24 in. waist. It fits perfectly and is very full. However, the way the tutu was packaged created wrinkles and puffed it up. I used a steamer and pressed some books on it so the tulle would flatten. Overall it was worth the cost and looks great.

Great Tutu
by: KarenA - 09/11/2014
Comfort:
Durability:
I bought the black tutu for my daughter for a fun photo shoot she was doing. The tutu is much thicker and better than other tutus we have purchased in the past. It is a little stiff now but it may loosen and fall lower with time. Not sure yet. Just beware that the tutu runs extremely small. We bought an XL size to be safe and it is marked a size 6 which seems pretty accurate. My daughter is 16 years old and thin but has a good sized butt. It just fits her. So order accordingly.

Beautiful but scratchy
by: Snoopyfan - 03/14/2014
Comfort:
Durability:
The tutu is gorgeous on and puts me in performance mode when wearing it. Runs a little small. I wear size 4 in street clothes and ordered a large. The stiffness is necessary to give it volume but I when I wore it for a rehearsal the tulle is so stiff it scratched my forearms and gave me a minor rash. It cleared up the next day. Still I recommend this product.

LOVE TUTU!!!!!!!!! Very pleased!
by: ballerinagrace - 11/11/2013

Great product holds together and is very beautiful! The one problem with it is it took awhile to break in, some things I did to help the process along is:
-instead of hanging it up side down, I took a string and tied it tight the other way for a few days.
- also I tacked it so the top layers would not fly up
Overall its a great product that is great for rehearsals! I would recommend this one over the Natalie because that one falls apart faster and is not as good of quality as this one is. HOPE THIS HELPS WITH YOU DECISION!

Satisfied

Comfort:

I am in Texas Ballet Theatre's Nutcracker this year, and I needed a new practice tutu. So I bought this one online and I'm pretty satisfied. It does not come tacked, as most tutus you order do not, so when you get it it will stick straight up. I tacked mine as soon as I got it and laid some books on it so that helped. it does scratch up your tights but it doesn't hurt your legs. Great tutu overall! (:

Unlike many reviews, I did not have a problem with my tutu being "flower" like. Although the tutu itself is rather stiff and may scratch up your legs, I am satisfied!

Stiff but Workable
by: GPDance - 03/19/2013
Comfort:
Durability:
I ordered this tutu for a contemporary pointe dance. I'm 5'4, medium frame but only 110 pounds and I wear a 0 in street clothes. I usually wear mediums in leotards due to my abnormally long torso, but I got a large just to be safe and it fits really nicely. It's very stiff and I'm still in process of flattening it out, but it seems like it will work very well. My one core complaint is that the tulle is so stiff it cuts up your legs taking it on and off. However, for the price it's a great tutu.

Sansha is an Aussie brand! I'm guessing all the people confused about the sizes on the inside tag are American...normally here a size 6 equals like a size 2 for you ladies or something like that. I love this tutu for the price! I would use the sizing guide and the recommendations from the other posts if you're not familiar with our sizes.

I bought this tutu realizing I would need a rehearsal tutu one day. It has come in handy sooo much! It really helps get prepared for a variation or dance, because leotards and skirts don't give you the feel of a tutu and how much room it takes up! The spandex bottom runs a bit small and rids the bottom so I recommend buying a larger size. Other than that it is great!

After twenty years of dancing and never being cast for a role which required the use of a tutu, I took matters into my own hands and bought myself this Sansha tutu. I wear a size 6-8 and bought the XL. It was snug around my thighs/groin at first but loosened up a little after use. When I first put it on it stuck straight up, probably from the way it was packaged. It fell into place after some wearing through jumps. I recommend this tutu as a very useful, practical tutu for rehearsing in, especially for the price. I found it to be very elegant as well (I bought it in white). The layers of tulle are heavy and strong enough for practice.

Nt a real tutu
by: tutudancer - 04/06/2012
Comfort:
Fit: Runs very small
I bought three of these tutus for a performance. When I tried one of them on, the tutu looked like an inverted mushroom. I understand that it takes time for tutus to flatten out, but these were unreal! The tulle was very scratchy, and my arms got red from brushing up against it. I know these are practice, not performance, tutus, but I would not use these for practice either, since they are quite different from a real tutu. I could not help laughing while dancing in one of these because they kept flopping up so high.

I am short and quite petite and so when I put this tutu on it actually makes me feel porportion and that its not over powering my body, it makes doing a variation much more comfortable and free! Ilove practising in this and if you dress the tutu up right, it would be great in a contemporary performance!

After reading other reviews, I was confused about the sizing so I thought I'd go for a large. I'm 5''10 and a size 8 (UK) in normal clothes and it fits me perfectly. However, my friend who is 5'7 and a size 12 (UK) in normal clothes found that it fit her perfectly aswell. The elasticated waist makes it a real comfortable fit.

Good tutu!
by: Rebecca - 06/13/2011 - Honolulu, Hi,
Comfort:

I just bought this for rehearsing variations and stuff and its great, its very stiff and strait and doesn't droop! The only thing is it flips up in jumps and stuff. The fit runs very small though, I usually take a medium-large in leotards. I'm 5'5 1/2 and hips are 37 and the XL fit perfectly! So I would definitely buy 2 sizes up from what you usually take. For example, the Small would be like a size 00, medium=2-4, large =4-6, x large=6-8.
Hope this helps!

This is a great tutu, well worth the 40 dollars. It does run very small though. I usually wear a size 2 or a small. I ordered this tutu in a large and it fits perfectly. It stuck up awkwardly on one side for a while but after going outside for a photo shoot it fell perfectly flat. If you have an doubts about getting this tutu, it is a truly good tutu for only 40 dollars.

I ordered ten of these for my students to wear. They do run small as described by the others. The ones that were packaged inside out (the shorter layers facing out) in the bags stick almost straight up, engulfing the dancers torso, but the ones that were packaged with the top layers facing out in the bag stick straight out as they should. The platter is a bit small, but you can't beat the value for the price.

I LIKE this tutu. I don't love it. I am 5ft 8in. 135lbs I have small hips but a larger butt. I don't know if it is because of my butt or just the way the tutu is but it goes up a great deal in the back. If it did not do that it would be a perfect tutu. I got an XL, I normally wear a M.

Great tutu!

I love this tutu. Our studio has used them so many times. Our teacher has put overlays on them for Copellia, Nutcracker and Spring Recital. We use them for rehearsals as well. For spring recital we had four size 3s and they fit a bunch of different size people. It looks really small at first but they stretch really well. They're a little hard to put in but once it's on you don't have to fuss with it. The only problem with the tutu is that when you first get it, it sticks up funny. It takes quite a bit of patting it. The other problem is that the bottom layer of tulle is very ruff, it snagged my tights in a couple places; so just be careful of how you take it on and off.
Over all a wonderful tutu. I would highly recomend it.

Thank goodness for these reviews. I ordered a size large and it fit perfectly. My waist is 25 inches, hips are 37 inches and I'm usually a small: 2-4/26-27. You would have to be a little girl or size 00 to wear a small, and a medium might work for someone who usually wears a 0. This tutu is GREAT, very well-made and the price is incredible.

The size is extremely misleading. As I fit well into medium and larges, I felt confident that I'd be able to wear a large. Boy, was I wrong. A reviewer below me hoped it was just her tutu that was mistagged, but my tag said the same thing. A 5 should not be considered a large by anyone. The quality was very good, especially for the price, however. That's the only reason I didn't give this a 1.

The quality of this tutu is outstanding for the price. I hope that the tutu I received was mistagged however, as I ordered a large (as the tag read) but could not get the tutu over my thighs (I'm a size 10). I read the Sansha tag attached to the tutu and it is a size 5! Gave it to one of my students and it is a true size 5. Should not be considered a size large, even by professional standards.
