I have had many one piece undergarments with these plastic straps on them. Within a few months, the straps fail and I have to sew elastic onto the body of the garment to get life out of it.
Of course, I am bustier and so need an undergarment. I wouldn't suggest this to anyone over an A bust.
I am a pre-professional ballet student and bought this in black to pair with a black rehearsal tutu for an informal upcoming performance. Following suit of other reviewers, I bought a size up (a medium rather than my usual XS/S, I'm 5'4 and petite frame). I couldn't even get this thing on. It's so tiny and very narrow! It's pretty, it seems durable, and it's exactly what is described, but it's just SO so small. Will be returning and finding another option... if what I received was a size medium, I'm imagining I'd need at least an L/XL to be able to get it on and actually dance in it, and I don't want to risk buying another that might not fit.
We had my daughter's measurements from other costumes we've bought for this year's competitions, so we compared her measurements to the sizing chart. According to the chart, she was at the upper end of the small. Since all the other comments here said that it ran small, we ordered a medium. There was no way she could wear that and still be able to dance! She managed to wriggle into the medium, but we had to peel it off of her to get her out of it. We're going to order a large and hope for the best.
I purchased this with the intention of creating a costume. I do think it has a very slim fit & is longer than I would expect for how it fits around That is great if you have a long torso. I did order a size up based on feedback from other buyers. That was a good suggestion. Some aspects of construction are very nice. It looks like it would be fairly durable. I will not be able to decorate the bodice how I had hoped (due to its structure) & it does look slightly different from the picture. Overall it is a good buy if you are in a pinch & can't have a proper bodice made. Its certainly more economical.
Since the other reviews said it runs very small, I ordered the XL. While the XL is certainly long enough, it's still very narrow. I could barely get it over my hips, which are 38" (which is in the size range for M). It does seem to be very well made, however. The stitching is secure and the fabric is quite thick and supportive, so I'm sure it would be a great performance costume for the right body. For reference, I am 5'7" and 150 lb.
My daughter wore this in a competition - sorry I don't have better photos. She is very slender, but not short, and typically wears a size S. The small was extremely tight, but for a performance, this was probably about right. You wouldn't want to wear it on a regular basis like that though! As you might be able to see from the photos, I did replace the straps, as they are very dark for those with lighter complexions. I decorated it heavily, and then was able to sew a tutu directly to it, without a basque. This is because it has a sort of band all around it that is several inches long. It comes down into a nice V shape in the front. I used the practice tutu from tutu.com, but I'm sure that the nicer tutus here would also work for that. Came out very well and saved me lots of $! She placed in the top 10 for senior women at the competition - not bad for a $50 leotard!
Have used these leotards for more than 5 years in studio and company shows and they hold up wonderfully. The nude cloth straps don't break like plastic ones. Leotards are true to size and hold their shape through washings. Would highly recommend. So glad you carry these now.
No, you cannot. Dyeing polyester requires that you boil the fabric in disperse type dye for an hour. However, the garment contains spandex as well. Spandex is extremely heat-sensitive and will be damaged by even one minute of boiling. - DDS Customer Service (05/23/2013)
