MusicalTheatreQueen12/13/2014NT MY FAVORITE
I used these and they did not last me very long at all. The shank is VERY hard! I got the medium shank and it felt like a hard shank! Also, the color is a bit strange. It's very pink, but also extremely light. It just doesn't look very good to me. These are also very LOUD and SQUEAKY! I was the loudest one in my class! The way they felt on my feet did not make up for any of these flaws. These are probably the least comfortable pair of pointe shoes I have ever worn. If you are planning on getting pointe shoes, I suggest getting the Bloch Serenade MKII. They are much prettier and are way more comfortable and easier to dance in.

AlexandriaBailerina06/11/2014GOOD BUT LOUD AND VERY PINK
I liked these shoes, but they are not my favorite. A few things you should know about them if you are ordering them online: They are very pink (I am used to russian pointes, so maybe I'm a little biased) and kinda loud. When we do bourres, my friend and I (we both have grishko ulanovas) are the loudest ones.

dancerwoman02/27/2013ANOTHER BAD FIT
I tried these in a size seven and they are too big. I seem to be able to stretch pointe shoes after I have worn them a few times and then they don't fit anymore. The hard shank is too hard and I cannot bend it correctly. I hate my feet!

Sierae05/02/2012GOOD POINTE SHOE
This is the second time i have ordered the Ulanova. I love them! I wear a 4.5 XXX. one of my only complaints is that the shank died pretty quickly. The box is still hard and good, unfourtnatly they are VERY loud, but thats also my fault. Now that they are dead they squeak alot. (exuse my terrible spelling)

Gibby04/06/2012I REALLY LOVED THESE SHOES!!!!
I am 35 6'0 190lbs man that has has just picked up piont again after 11 year absence. I had been fitted for a Grishko Elite and they offered no support for me. I have a narrow feet and long toes and high arches. I got these shoes just to try and they are perfect for me. I loved dancing in them and my teacher has even noticed and difference in my pionte work. My only complaint is that after using them for 2 months my pair was DONE!! But hopfully after I lose more weight they will last a little longer. But I love them!!!!

These were my second pair of pointe shoes ever. I like them A LOT better than my first pair. They made my extra wide feet look so skinny and beautiful. They lasted me a very fair amount of time. The only complaint I have is that sometimes the box would smash my big toe and when I took the pointe shoe off there would be bruises on my toe from where the shoe was applying pressure on it. All in all, though, I really like this pointe shoe. One of the better ones I've tried.

Bronte10/04/2010GOOD.
These are good shoes, I didn't have a great experience with them because I had them without the drawstring, and the gaped and slipped off my heel. Otherwise, they made my feet look good, and were pretty nice to work through. The do get squeaky once they're pretty dead. Good shoes though.

ktydlr05/18/2010PERFECT FOR HIGH ARCHES
After a long journey through every pointe shoe brand... these are the best for high arches and thin feet. I order them 5.5 XX H. They are perfect! After having pointes that died within 2 or 3 weeks I used them 2 months for a recital, took a break and 3 months for a contest and they support my arch and I still can feel the floor (in that painful way when the box is worn out) Perfect!!

Emmy04/18/2010FABULOUS!
I love these! I have been dancing for 5 years and on pointe for 2 years. My first pointe shoes were Bloch Sonatas, but those broke in a week. Then my ballet teacher told me to try Grishko. I have strong feet with a high arch. I tried the Fouettes, but the box softened after one use and they hurt my toes. Now, my feet have the perfect support and my toes don't hurt so bad!

Personally, I don't mind the squeak (not that squeaky) - I have danced 25 years, and have danced in GM's Freeds, Bloch's and Grishko's. My feet are quite strong, and have an "average arch". Rolling on and off pointe is very smooth, which I like. I'm glad that they now have a draw string as that does help to keep your ankle in the shoe in grande plie, which was a problem in the past. They also last far longer (for me anyway - but pointe shoes are so subjective and individualized) than Freeds or Blochs. I'm not comparing longevity with GM's as their construction is so radically different. Nor am I casting aspersions at other brands.
As to the squeak, it is that nail that causes the squeak as it loosens from the shank. The shoe is excellent for class and performance. I've pulled the nail and it does stop the squeak, and has not caused the performance of the shoe to degrade - but do it at your own risk, or just enjoy the extra musical accompaniment LOL

Rachael05/13/2009 Lenexa, Ks,
I have used these shoes for the past 6 pairs and I really like them. I recently considered changing shoes because my right foot, which is more flexible, was breaking the top of the box at the metatarsal, causing pain because of stretching to the top of my foot. However, with jet glue to the inside of the box and a horizontal line on the outside of the shoe where needed and it's perfect! The tapered box also works well for my narrowed feet.

Katharine08/22/2008 Las Vegas, Nv,WOW! GREAT SHOE!!
Finally a shoe that fits me like a glove and looks fantastic on my foot. With long toes, wide foot, high instep and very strong arch, I use the hard shank. Jet glue on the box gives longer life. These shoes last me 3 to 4 weeks, while other shoes have lasted only days.

I've always been a big fan of Grishko. I have a strong arch but not too high of an instep and my 2nd toe is longer than my first. The Ulanova gives me the right kind of vamp and support for my long toes and the medium shank strength lasted about a month or so. The only problem I have with them is that the box/platform area tends to wear out more quickly in comparison to the shank. But overall, it's a fantastic shoe for people with longer toes.

Mikayla11/25/2007 Pennsylvania,GREAT SHOE!
I loved this shoe! Before I had Merlet, but I did not like them at all. Then I tried on a pair of these and they were great!
And to help with the squeaking, pull the shank away from the shoe. Don't cut, just pull it off.

Lis07/25/2007 Pennsylvania,GRISHKO ULANOVA
I just started back into dance after about ten years. I needed something that would fit comfortably on my wider than average feet (thanks to a bunion that I developed from my previous pointe experience). These shoes really were a great fit in the box but the lack of drawstring made the heels slip off during grand plie. I see they come with a drawstring now, which is a good idea. It would have fixed my problem. I think all in all, they wear a little fast but they are a really comfortable shoe. I am going to try the "2007" shoe instead.

Hannah05/10/2007AMAZING!
These shoes are the only ones that I have ever been able to wear for a solid month. My arch is so high and strong, I would wear the 2007s maybe twice, and the shank would already be broken. I have been going on and off of these and 2007s. Sometimes I find the hard shank a little hard to break- in the first time but once they are broken in, they are perfect. They haven't completely broken on me ever, and I wear them until I feel like I have no shoe on, or nothing underneath my feet. I can recommend that you try them and start with a med shank, but everyone's feet are different, so I can't say that these will be perfect for you, but they were for me. They do tend to make a little noise at the very end when they are very dead, but other than that, they are the best shoes for me!!!

Emily04/22/2007 Idaho,THESE SHOES ARE...OK
I thought these shoes were . . . OK. I thought I loved them at first, but now, I HATE them. The shank always breaks after like a week. I even got the Proflex and they still broke. And en pointe, it looks like my arch is at a 90 degree angle and I think that is very unattractive. I like the arch to look rounded. These shoes do not promote that.

PacificNWDancer04/08/2007 Oregon,THE SOURCE OF THE SQUEAK.
I've been dancing (ballet, but also many other forms) for over 20 years, 14 of those en pointe, and these were one of my favorite models of pointe shoes I've tried (I first tried them about 10 years ago). I also noticed the foot sole's (the board inside the shoe's) tendency to separate at the pleats after some time. I don't have the highest natural arch, and this shoe is probably one of the most flattering I've found. These broke in easily, and though I wouldn't recommend these for someone with really, really strong feet, the shank got just about perfect for me.
And finally... THE DREADED SQEAK... it comes from the nails in the shank, particularly the one that used to reside in the heel of the shoe, the head of the nail could be seen right below the "M" on the sole. My first pair never squeaked (and never separated inside), but my second pair squeaked like mad and separated inside. Finally, I just removed the nail on the heel and the squeaking stopped! So there you have it. I don't know what the construction of the shoe is like now... seems as though the nail is now inside and further down towards the box. I seem to remember looking at newer versions of the Ulanova I, and it seems like there's still a nail in the heel, but it's partially covered by the leatherboard. So maybe if you're brave or have a completely dead pair, try removing the nails and see if the squeak goes away.
I'm not responsible for any destroyed pointe shoes, haha (so do at your own risk), but anything's worth a shot if you love the shoe, but hate the noise it makes!

I loved these shoes. I have wide feet and slim heels so they were beautiful on my feet. They squeak a little but it doesn't bother me at all. These were my first shoes that actually made me turn without getting scared that I might go over.

When I was breaking in the shoe, the shank broke right away under the metatarsals. Thus, the shoe provided no support. So basically, when en pointe, my foot was curled over. Not attractive or safe!

Asami10/28/2006 Costa Mesa, Ca,LOVE THEM....
These shoes are amazing! I just bought my first pair two weeks ago and they look and feel great. I have VERY strong, wide feet and high arches, but they really support my feet well. I've only had Grishkos (Elite were my first and Mayas most recently) but these are the most comfortable so far. The only problem I have with the Ulanova is that the shank has broken down way too fast for my liking. I had to get a medium due to a recent ankle/foot injury, so that might be the reason. I usually have to use a hard shank due to my strong feet. We'll see what happens with the new pair! Great shoes, though. A must have!

maplebunny 01/24/2014 Age: 17 or under how does the sizing compare to the 2007?
Is the sizing pretty much the same as the 2007s?
The Ulanova suggests ordering 3 sizes smaller, whereas the 2007 suggests ordering 2 to 2.5 sizes smaller. This sizing is based on your street shoe size. - DDS Customer Service (01/27/2014)
From my personal experience, the sizing is actually quite different. My normal shoe size is a 9 1/2. in the 2007s, i wear a 7 1/2 XXXX. In the Ulanovas, I wear a size 7 XXX. So, for me, the width changed as well as the length. - Acrojazzarina (06/02/2014)
If i have a size 9 foot what size should i get? i tried 7.0 but they are too big so should i go to a
Sizing on this shoe recommends ordering 3 sizes smaller than your street shoe. I would recommend a size 6.0, which is going to be about a half inch smaller than the size 7.0 you have now. - DDS Customer Service (01/15/2014)
deb 02/05/2013 Chicago Age: 35 to 44 What is the difference between Ulanova I and Fouette? The descriptions are identical.
The only difference is the Grishko's roll-through design found in the Ulanova. - DDS Customer Service (02/05/2013)
HI Deb. I have worn both. the foutee doesn't have a draw string and the box has higher wings than the ulanova. i prefer the ulonova for my foot, the box fits me better than the foutte. - Ballet4life1987nora (08/14/2015)
